The book is well-written and fast-paced which is a plus, in my humble opinion. It's written in first person POV, with all but one chapter done in main character, Lex's voice. The book is listed under Mystery, Thriller, Suspense on Amazon, but I would consider it Urban Fanstasy. As you can see, it does have a pretty cool cover!
The story grabbed me pretty quickly with its strong start. The first chapter is action-packed and gripping. Shortly thereafter, it started to lose me a bit, and I had trouble reconnecting with the characters and story. I did manage to get back into it about half-way through, but none of it really lived up to that first chapter for me.
The biggest drawback for me, and one of the reasons I began to disconnect, was the number of similarities to other popular tales. What could've been a really good story began to feel like a combination of several others. There are several pop culture references throughout the story, which I usually like. Seeing if I can catch them keeps it interesting and adds to the book for me. But when scenes and people/places start feeling like I've read it before - and I start remembering where I've read it - it's a bit disappointing, especially when a story holds so much promise.
I haven't read any of this author's other works, so I don't know if this is a common thing, but I sincerely hope not. Without being familiar with her other books, I'm left rather ambivalent about whether I would recommend this one.
