Meow by Steve Milton

I had my heart set on a Romantic Comedy tonight when I started reading Meow, by Steve Milton. This was my first read by this author and I do believe it will be my last.

Meow is written in third person POV and is touted in the blurb as a Gay Romantic Comedy. While it is Gay Romance, I didn't find the comedy. It is MM and there is some steam, so I would recommend adult audiences for this one. This is the third book in Milton's Dreamboat Island series and I do have to say that the cover is certainly dreamy!

Clair and Blake's first meeting is a mess. Blake dresses down Clair, while Clair worries about what a guy named Catsmeat will do to Linus. But Blake is the only person willing to help not only Linus recover from tularemia, but Clair recover from his loneliness and uncertainty.

Clair can't stop admiring Blake's ripped body, his professional dedication, and his wacky humor -- while Blake is in love with a lanky young man who's smart, wise, caring, and handsome way beyond his nineteen years.

Blake offers Clair a room at his beachfront mansion, with absolutely no obligations. Clair assumes Blake expects a little something-something, but Blake pushes him away. If Clair can't accept Blake's secret, he and Blake might remain nothing more than housemates.

Meow is a gay romantic comedy with a feel-good HEA, copious breath mints, a profanity-activated feeder, lots of laughs, and a whiny cat named Paul Lynde. No cliffhanger, no cheating, and no sad kitties.

If you've made it this far, you've read the blurb. Well, that pretty much sums up the book. The story did have potential, but it just wasn't realized. In fact, the whole story seemed a bit stilted to me. There was one twist in the story, but when Blake takes Clair to the gym and Sylvestre is mentioned, I had a pretty good guess at to where it was going. - That's it, that's as close to a spoiler as you get. Besides, if you've read the whole blurb, that's the only thing it doesn't tell you, so I'm certainly not going to!😏

A big issue for me is in that last paragraph of the blurb - the part where it says "gay romantic comedy." Had it just said gay romance, I may have given it one more star. Maybe! I'm still  not sure on that one. Anyway, when I see the word comedy, I expect at least a chuckle now and then. Nada, zilch, nothing! Not even one small chuckle. It is a fairly quick read, but I did expect to find something humorous. Blake's sarcasm had the potential for humor and I'm usually a big fan of sarcasm, but instead of funny, he just comes across as a jerk. A lonely and sad jerk, but a jerk nonetheless. 

As I've said before, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to a book. Once I've started it, I have to finish. I did finish this one, but with its stilted story and lackluster attempt at humor, it's not something I would recommend. I mentioned that this was my first read by this author and if this one is an example of what to expect, it will most likely be my last.
