✱✱ Book Review ✱✱ 19 Souls (A Sin City Investigation) by J.D. Allen

This cold, gloomy winter weather has been perfect for curling up under a blanket with a good book. JD Allen's upcoming debut novel, 19 Souls, is not only perfect for that, but it's also a promising start to a new series.

Her bloody finger left a translucent smear on the phone screen as she glanced through the list of private investigators in Vegas. Her stained nail came to rest on Sin City Investigations.
Jim Bean would serve her well.
Private investigator Jim Bean is a straightforward, to-the-point man. He likes his cases to follow suit. But when his latest client, Sophie Evers, asks him to find her brother Daniel, Jim has no idea how complicated his life is about to become.
As he falls deep into a manipulative game of cat and mouse, Jim uncovers the horrible truth about Sophie. Now he must set things right before her plan leads to the loss of innocent souls . . . even more than it already has.

19 Souls releases on February 8th and is available for pre-order.

Momma Says: 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
19 Souls is a well-written and gripping start to a promising series. We're introduced to PI, Jim Bean, a
plain-spoken guy who does business out of diner. He's somewhat rough around the edges and has a wit about him that is, at times, quite humorous. Jim takes on what he thinks is a straight-forward case and bites off a bit more than he wants to chew. The story is more thriller than mystery as we know who the antagonist is from the start. The suspense surrounds when Jim will figure out what Sophie is up to, who she will kill next, and how long it will take to stop her. I was pleasantly surprised with how well done Sophie's character is. I am often disappointed in a female antagonist, but Sophie is the very picture of a psychopath. She's completely obsessed with Dan and almost arrogantly sure of her actions as she manipulates, connives, and kills her way to having him. The little voice in her head was an added bonus that lends itself to just how far round the bend she's gone.
The story did slow down a bit more than I cared for at times, but that aside, this first Sin City Investigation held my interest and kept me turning pages. It's an impressive start to a new series and a solid introduction to the author. I'll be interested to see what's next.
