"...that was why Mom was so strong. Growing up alone, she had to be," Sean says of his superhero of a mother. I never had a superhero mom, so I made it my goal to create one for Dakota Son. Claire Foster is a single mother, and successful journalist. Her husband died performing missionary work in third world countries, leaving her to raise two preschool age children on her own; her biological daughter Sara, and Sean, the miracle baby abandoned at the same hospital, the same night Sara was born. Even in her exhausted, post-labor state, the moment she laid eyes on the tiny premature little boy she knew he was meant to be her son.
Sean is dealt blow after blow throughout his life, in the form if cystic fibrosis, bullying, sexual abuse and even a broken heart. Claire is his rock, his strength- a shining example of what a mother's love can accomplish.
And when someone she once despised (Diego, the abused father of Sean’s girlfriend Jen) needs her help, the tough as nails investigative journalist can be a total bad-ass.
Excerpt
When Jen hit a long straight road and her driving became a little less scary, I took out my phone to call Mom again. This time, she picked up. It was hard convincing her of my plan, which was for her to go over to Diego’s to get Father Daniel’s contact details, and then to call 911 as soon and as discreetly as she could. Neither Jen nor I had any doubt that she’d have cause to call.
Mom, in journalist warrior mode, wanted to head over there with the entire North Dakota Police Force—or so it seemed. I put the phone to speaker, and Jen explained to her why that wasn’t going to work. If confronted by the authorities, Suzanna would manipulate the situation to her advantage; law-enforcement would undoubtedly side with her presentation of the facts and my mother would get hauled off to jail for trespassing.
A little pissed at taking our instructions, Mom finally agreed to make an appearance after work—minus the cavalry.
“After work?” I wondered. My mother worked from home. “You mean you’re not going to go until after dark?”
“I have a meeting at City hall,” she explained. “But, yes, I planned on going after dark. You said I need to take her on alone, right?” My mother was sounding like someone out of an action movie.
I wasn’t sure what to say. After all, when it came down to it, I was all the way in California. “Do whatever you need to do,” I replied. “I love you, Mom.”
“Thank you,” Jen said as I cut the call. Her driving became calmer.
“If anyone can take on my mother, it’s your mom.”
