You must be reasonable.” The sincerity of his petition somewhat reduced my agitation, but it wasn’t enough for me to give in. “I’m reasonable enough to know that if you don’t come back, I’ll be alone for the rest of my life.” I saw the conflict in his eyes. He was flattered by my affection and loyalty yet devastated by my refusal to entertain the possibility of a healthy future without him. When he spoke again, his mature wisdom reinforced his words. “You are stubborn, Miss Contini. I just want you to remember this conversation. If things don’t turn out the way we hope, you don’t have my permission to give in to grief as I did in the past. You have a greater advantage. You know much more than I did then,” he said emphatically. “I want you to enjoy life with or without me.”
