Genre:
Epic Fantasy
Wizards.
Sea Serpents. Pirates. Dragons.
Follow
Darek of the Red Claw Clan through this three book box set, a young
sailor crossing blades with ruthless pirates and warring clans. As
his hidden powers grow, first in his natural ability to commune with
sea dragons, so too does his uncanny dragon-riding skill and sudden
bursts of psi power.
Yet
a foul wind blows across the serpent deeps, bringing with it a former
apprentice, Cyrus, a forsaken sorcerer who wields terror and death.
The Dragonclaw Islands are thrust into the brink of war as Darek
struggles to find his path, unlock his skills, though alienated from
his sister and parents. Is he destined to become the Mage Reborn?
Ever more does he realize he must stop the tides of war, bring order
to clan and family while the rising menace of Cyrus lurks
unseen.
Taken
under the wing of the ailing Dragon Mage Agrippa, Darek uses his
powers to unite the Dragon Riders against the growing swarm of sea
serpents controlled by Cyrus’s forbidden magic. The fires of
rebellion, stoked by a Pirate Queen, plunge the Islanders into an
all-out war among dragons, sea serpents, and monsters of the deep.
But are Darek’s powers enough to combat these foes, especially when
he is linked to the pirates by blood bond and their beautiful
queen?
Dive
into this world of adventure, imagination, and danger that fans of
Dragonriders of Pern, Eragon, Dragonlance, Dragon Blood, Dragonvein,
Temeraire, and Dragon School will love.

A black-tipped fin cut through the water, surging through the waves as a shark might. Yet something much deadlier glided beneath the surface. Darek never could get used to the sight of a sea dragon swimming alongside the repurposed whaling vessel. The creature’s purple snout and streamlined head emerged from the water, followed by a long, scaly neck. Plated shoulders and an armored body the size of a full-grown killer whale arced out of the water. The tapered shark skin harness lay exposed, secured as it was just behind the folded wings. The Sea Dragon Rider clung to the harness, taking a great gasp of air before diving back underwater in the hunt for the sea serpent, the finned tip of the tail vanishing with a final splash.
Darek blinked in amazement. Every child born on the Dragonclaw Islands learned to swim as soon as he or she could walk, but the Sea Dragon Riders made free diving an art form. The best could hold their breath for five minutes or more as their mount traveled through the water faster than the swiftest dolphin. Even then, a rider’s body was put under incredible force clinging behind the contoured bulwark of the waterproof leather harness.
Darek wondered if his half-sister had ever achieved her dream of becoming one—or if she was still alive.
The crack of the Slavemaster’s whip forced his thoughts back to the present. “I’ll have no idleness on this ship!” Kern bellowed. “Leave off your patchwork for now and report to the boiler room. The Captain will want as much speed as we can muster for this hunt.”
Darek, his biceps bronzed with soot, looked down at the canvas sail and long needle he now held motionless. Stupid fool, you shouldn’t have let yourself get distracted. Instead of the light sewing work, he would once more be pressed into grueling labor. Life for a slave on a whaling vessel was harder and more dangerous than even working the mines.
The spotter atop the crow’s nest squinted and extended his spyglass. He scanned the horizon. In the distance, three black spines shot through the water. “Serpent, off the port bow!” the man yelled down.
Barnabas the Bosun took up the signal, blowing his pipes three times to signal the target was in sight. The lanky man was growing nearsighted and slow in his old age, but he kept his pipes well-oiled and his lungs were still as strong as the day he had blown his first warning.
With a bang, the door to the captain’s quarters flew open and out stepped the loose-garbed figure of Captain Raithan. As an expert in sea warfare, his uncanny skills had propelled the grizzly-bearded man to become one of the wealthiest hunters in the Black Claw Clan. He now owned more ships, sea dragons, and slaves than any other man—earning him a seat in the ‘Clutch’, the Dragonclaw Council that barely held back the clans from the brink of war.
“Bosun!” growled Captain Raithan, “turn us to port and bring us to hunting speed.”
“Aye, Captain!” Barnabas saluted with a leathery fist. A long blast of his pipes quickly set the men into the rigging to unfurl the sails to their full size. Kern ducked below to the boiler room.
Out on the waves, a massive bottle-green shape surfaced and dipped into the waves. Serpent!
“In
order to be happy you must create something meaningful in this world
and not just be a consumer of life. It is also important to share
your love freely with friends and family. I believe in confronting
your fears and experiencing new things, places, and people. Lastly,
everyone needs something to believe in whether it be religion, a
cause, or even themselves.” –
