Brimstone
Fairbridge Book 2
by Peter van der Walt
A few short months ago, blood filled the streets of Fairbridge, North Carolina. Now the city is recovering from the carnage that was the Pride Massacre. Sort of.
Former Combat Rescue Officer Paul Draker is also ready to leave the past behind. The physical and emotional wounds of a career spent in war zones. The guilt over staying in the closet to save his career. The cost of survival. With his friends encouraging him to go easy on himself, he is ready to rebuild his life. This time, on his own terms.
But halfway across the country, a psychopathic sexual predator is released from prison… and he has a score to settle.
And Paul Draker is about to discover that, while he may be done with the past – it may not be done with him.
Momma Says: 5 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Peter van der Walt's debut, Under Fire, blew me away, and to be honest, I was worried that this follow-up might pale in comparison. He certainly set the bar high with that first Fairbridge book. My worries were unfounded because this second book featuring Paul Draker is tension-filled from the beginning, and it doesn't let up.
Paul is one of those characters who pulls at the heartstrings almost quietly. He's a bit flawed by his past and the loss of a loved one, plus he's just trying to get on with things after the Pride Massacre. But there's more to this former military man than meets the eye, and a psychopath hellbent on revenge may just bite off more than he can chew.
Parts of this story are hard to get through with the graphic nature, but the whole thing comes together for a gripping and gritty addition to Fairbridge books. If you haven't read the first book in the series, I would suggest that you start there before reading Brimstone. It can technically stand on its own, but there are references here and there to the events in the first book. I know I'll be impatiently waiting for whatever comes next for Paul and the little town of Fairbridge.
