Momma Says: 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐
Brett Salter's The Search for Synergy is the introduction to The Talisman Series. Admittedly, I'm a little past the target age group for this book - okay, maybe a lot past, but that's beside the point. The point is that my 14-year-old is pretty much exactly the target audience, and the genre and premise are right up his alley. Obviously, anytime we find a book he wants to read, I'm a happy momma.
When I asked him what he thought about the book, he summed it up with an "it's cool." (Like most teenagers, he's a young man of few words.) Fortunately, I also read it. Plus there's the fact that he immediately wanted to read the next in the series, so I think it's safe to say this is a good book for teenagers who enjoy fantasy.
The story follows Rome and Julian, who aren't your average teenage boys. Even my old cynical self got a bit swept up with the very idea of being something so exciting as a dragon or a knight. And I really liked the way Salter worked the librarian into the story. The characters are likable, and the world-building was good. I like that the writing is descriptive without feeling like info dumps. It's done so well that it was easy to visualize the scenes as they're taking place. The only drawback I found with the book is that it could use a more thorough edit, but it's not so distracting as to pull me out of the story.
Rather than go any further and risk giving away the book's secrets, I'll just say that this first in the series is an exciting and engaging introduction to a fantastical world. It is a continuing story, so don't expect everything to be wrapped up nice and neat at the end of this one. Do expect to be invested in these characters and their story, and to be ready to move right on to the next in the series. If you're like me and hate the wait between series installments, you'll be happy to know this one is 4 strong as of the time of this review.
