EXCERPT

“Flip it. I’ll choose either ‘Face’ or ‘Fin’, if I am wrong then I’ll drink, if I’m right, you drink. Simple.” I scrunch my nose and examine the coin closely. I don’t know how, but this game feels rigged in his favour. “Alright,” I say hesitantly, “But if I find out you’re cheating I’ll summon Cerberus to chew you up and spit you out.” “Can you summon Cerberus?” he asks with an arched brow. “I haven’t had to try…yet,” I say with a shrug. He chuckles. It’s a magnificent melody. There is something so wholly mortal about it, and although I wish otherwise, I find myself savouring the sound and remembering it for future use. It may not be a syren song, but it’s something I wish to practice more of. “I do not cheat; I just don’t lose,” he informs me. “You can’t always win.” I toss the coin high into the air. It gyrates in the candlelight between us, splashing dots of golden light across Kellan’s shadowed face. I catch the coin with both hands. “Watch me,” he says casually, “It’s fin.” I unclasp my palms slowly as if I were releasing a dragonfly. I feel his smugness before I even see the coin. He hands me the refilled cap with a grin, “Best of three?”

“Some stuff arrived for Nina Petrova,” Dimitri says and looks at me pointedly. “So? Tell some of the men to take them to the east wing.” “What should we do with the lamps?” “What lamps?” I ask, and then I remember. Shit. I put my elbows onto the desk and press the heels of my hands into my eyes. “Big? Gold with black?” “Yes.” “How many?” “Fourteen,” he deadpans. “Fourteen lamps . . .” I sigh. “Put them into the library for now.” “Alright. What about the animal?” he asks, and my head snaps up. “What . . . animal?” “Small. Black. It’s in a carrier so I’m not sure what it is. Looks like a dog, but it sounds strange.” I grab the phone and call Nina. “Did you seriously order an animal online?” “Excuse me?” “Dimitri says there’s a dog that came with your decoration stuff.” “Oh, that’s Brando. I’m coming right down.” I stare at the phone in my hand. Brando. I’m going to kill her.

“Are we bartering?” the Prime Magus spoke a few words, and the blue energy of the shield shot a bolt of lightning at the creature, knocking it back against the altar. Witness’s head cocked to the right side. Black eyes stared into oblivion past the Prime Magus. “Bind me, then. Let me do your will, let me secure the peace of your kingdom lest a war of brother tear asunder the peace you Allurians have tried to build.” “A war?” “Oh yes, a war. Even now, it is given to me to know that a war unlike any other may enrapture your world. Kal must be stopped. My freedom is that price.” “Bounded freedom? A contradiction in terms,” the Prime Magus said. He waved his hand at the possibility. Clearly, the creature knew something, yet, to bargain with demons…

Hi. I’m Nora, and I bring people’s worst nightmares to life.

Everyone needs a hobby, right?

Gah. Don’t look at me like that. It’s not like I do it on purpose. I’m cursed. Like bonafide needle-pricking, frog-kissing, poison-apple cursed. Except worse because in addition to slowly chipping away at my soul, this thing will eventually kill me too.

Let me start over…

It all goes back to wishes. The damned things come true around me but in the worst possible way. And I don’t mean that lightly because, well… sometimes people wind up dead.

The kicker? Once I grant my quota of ill-fated desires, that’s it for me. Finito. I know because there were others before me. Just our sick family heritage. We screw people over, and then we die. Hell of a way to live, right?

I think I might be the last one too. I’ve searched my whole life and found nothing. No answers. No cure. Not one hint of magic in this entire world besides me.

Well, that is… until today.

*This is the first book in the all-new urban fantasy series: Stones & Curses. If you like fierce heroines with hearts of gold, edge-of-your-seat adventure, a touch of swoony romance, and enough mind-blowing treachery to leave you wondering what in the world just happened, this is the series for you.

Darkness settled around us, and I realized that the forest had gone completely still again. Goosebumps ran down my arms, making every little hair stand on end. I couldn’t quite put my finger on how I knew, but… Something was watching. “Where are we going?” I asked in a near-whisper. Rafe put his finger to his lips, his footfalls silent. Every instinct inside of me was screaming for me to run. To hide. To get the hell out of here. He crouched, sliding to his knees beside a massive tree. It wasn’t a palm and not a deciduous tree, but something in between that I’d never seen before. It had a dark, thick trunk the diameter of a small car that stretched toward the darkening heavens. The top held a plentiful array of branches, all draped with green leaves the size of my body. I watched as Rafe pushed some ferny underbrush away at its base, exposing the tree’s huge, gnarled roots. The woody knots curled up and out, leaving a dark opening beneath—big enough for him to slip through. He crawled inside, waving a hand for me to follow. Do I have to? I glanced up one last time and instantly wished I hadn’t. Several pairs of glowing red eyes blinked down at me from the treetops. My heart thumped like a drum, and I swallowed hard before scrambling after Rafe. The cold, damp earth wedged beneath my fingernails as I tried to get situated in a way that didn’t put me right on top of Rafe. The pitch-black hollow was barely big enough for us to sit beside one another. Fine bits of dirt rained down, falling into my shirt while hairlike roots tickled my cheeks. It was gross, but I supposed it was better than out there. Out there, we were dinner. A soft glow illuminated Rafe’s face, and I turned to find the obelisk in his palm. He moved over me, reaching toward the entrance of our little hideaway. I tried to make myself as small as possible as he sealed us in, covering the way out with the broad leaves and ferns that he’d pushed aside earlier. I watched in fascination as he used the small stone to draw a line in the dirt, and I felt the hum of magic splash against my senses. The line glowed white for just a few seconds before fading and returning to normal. What was that? “Protection spell,” he said, answering my unspoken question and making me wonder if he had powers of the psychic persuasion. “This is a zylas tree. Instead of spreading its roots deep, it stretches wide, often leaving hollows underneath. It also has inherent magic that, when paired with a stone like this”—he held up the obelisk—“can enhance magical properties.” “The stone can do spells?” “They call it a Lightbringer. It’s a protection stone with a minimal range of things it can do—like that spell. It’s not foolproof, but it should keep us safe tonight.” I had a feeling his words were meant to reassure himself just as much as me, but it worked anyway. He had a way of making me feel safe. A revelation that shocked me. He settled back down beside me, pulling the small pack off his back. He rested the obelisk on a root where it continued to light our little enclosure with a faint glow. I shifted and ended up practically on top of him again. “Well, this is awkward,” I said, only making it more so as I continued to try to get comfortable. There was a damn rock beneath my left butt cheek that seemed to follow me no matter which way I moved. He chuckled and lifted an arm, gesturing for me to settle in the nook next to his body. I only hesitated a moment before giving in. He was the perfect balance of strength and softness, and I felt myself relaxing into it. His arm tightened around me, and he rested his cheek on the top of my head. When did I stop hating Rafe again? “You should get some sleep,” he said. Right. Not happening. With every blink, I heard the flapping of giant wings and felt the stare of red gazes. At least those thoughts kept me from reliving our blood pixie and drosera encounters. Those would come later; I was sure of it. “What are the things in the trees?” I whispered. “Predators. Big, big predators.” A shiver rippled through me, and I caught sight of the tiniest hint of black smoke curling off my pinky finger. I’d begun to realize that it was a defense mechanism, triggered when I let the terror take hold. There was more to it than that—like how I sometimes seemed to run out of juice—but that was the gist. I clenched my hand into a fist. No. I would not be afraid. “Remind me, what keeps us from becoming their dinner again?” I could feel him smiling against my forehead. “They can’t fit through the door.” “Look, everybody, it’s Rafe the comedian.”

EXCERPT

The glare of the light lessened and, blinking quickly, she peered to find a doorway before her. It was made of light that crackled and pulsed like electricity. Through it Erica could see London, but a different London, one with horses and carriages upon its cobbled streets and men and women walking about in smart jackets and top hats, long dresses and warm shawls: the crack that had opened the doorway started at her footfall. Taking her foot away, the light crackled anew. She walked slowly around the side of the monument to look at the street behind it, but there were no horses or carriages or smartly dressed people, just the deserted Embankment. She walked back round to the front of the monument where the doorway persisted to flicker brightly.

Recalling herself, she spun round. “Oh, no…” Michael was standing stock-still and his eyes were no longer sad but wide with shock.

Magic, monsters, and a match made in heaven… maybe.

Oh, and a somewhat mute aardvark.

Hi. I’m Jayne. Yeah, I know, plain human Jayne. But that’s not the story of my life. This book is. It all started with a visit from the Book Fairy. Yeah, the all-powerful Book Fairy. It’s unfortunate we haven’t been on good terms. It’s even more unfortunate that when she finally deigns to visit me, it’s for murder. I mean, a murder. Damn articles, they really do make a difference.

Add in my fantasy lover, a vampire Prince who might just hate me, and things surely can’t get worse, right?

Warning: This is an inverse harem scene type of book. If you don’t like group ceiling sex, this book might not be for you.

Actual Note: Mild profanity. This is a slow burn romance with just the right amount of spiciness to feel comfortable reading on public transit, so long as you’re prepared to laugh out loud.

Excerpt

I’m taken aback because the fairy is talking to someone, his back to me.

“Of course it was an urolodyte. What is this nonsense, Aralia?” A deep voice curls around me, sending shivers down my spine. “Erold just wants to cover it up. I do not sanction this investigation. We need to focus on protecting the people from more attacks and figuring out who’s behind them! We need to focus on what this kingdom needs right now.”

I wait in the doorway, not wanting to interrupt the conversation, but the Book Fairy spies me and does anyway. “Oh, good, Jayne, you’re all ready.” She looks back at him and smiles sweetly. “This is the investigator I was telling you about,” the Book Fairy explains.

He turns, and sharp gray eyes narrow at me. Gorgeous gray eyes. In a ruggedly handsome face. His lean muscular build doesn't have the shine of someone who uses magic to advance his looks. This guy is naturally handsome, and it's unreal. I try not to gape like an idiot.

“I know she looks like the town dimwit, but she's confirmed it wasn’t an urolodyte,” the Book Fairy continues. I might not have succeeded in the no gaping thing.

He turns back to the Book Fairy. “I don’t think we need to involve anyone else, especially not some inexperienced girl who looks lost and confused,” he says in the crisp syllables of nobility. He’s wearing common clothes, but they’re pristine, like a royal who is pretending to be normal. I’m not convinced.

“She’s Jayne, an author. She knows her stuff, and she writes mysteries. In fact, it was her novel that helped us realize something was off at the murder scene.”

I preen a little. I want to ask the Book Fairy—Aralia?—if I can have that in writing, but I’m captured in that gray gaze again. People shouldn't be allowed to be so beautiful. Brooding black eyebrows, proud nose, sharp slanting cheekbones, full lips, and a strong jaw in a perfectly symmetrical face. I want to contribute some witty repartee, especially being someone who specializes in words, but my brain goes haywire when he looks at me. It's unfair. My small social circles don’t include people like this, and I’m too vulnerable.

“Umm,” I manage. Impressive, Jayne.

His jaw ticks and he flexes his fingers impatiently. This guy looks familiar, but his tense stance and angry vibe scramble my thoughts.

I finally untie my tongue enough to say, “Umm, sorry, Mr. High-and-Mighty, not everybody can be a perfect looking vampire. Nor can everyone be born into prestige and wealth. You should take a page from people like your very own Crown Prince. He cares for the little guys.” I humph and cross my arms, but the effect is somewhat muted by the look of horror I spy on the Book Fairy’s face.

She quickly fills the growing silence, “Prince Liam, just give her a chance. We’ve got nothing to lose. I’ll take responsibility for her.” She puts her arm on his again, in a placating gesture. “And you don’t really want to go head-to-head with councilman Erold. You can work on keeping the people safe from any possible urolodyte attacks and seeing if there's a connection with the animal attacks at the border. But if we're right, and there is a killer out there bold enough to attack Alain, we can't honestly let this go.”

Oh my gods! Her words roll through me because I didn’t process anything past Prince-effing-Liam, Mythia’s Number One Bachelor! He looks so different in real life from the cheap drawings I've seen, especially without his formal regalia, but now I recognize him. And now I’m definitely gaping like an idiot.
